Why 3ft9?

I was watching a television program called Megastructures about the Boston "Big Dig". The project was huge, costing somewhere in the region of 15 billion dollars and taking 20 years to complete. The first major stage of the project was a tunnel going under Boston Harbour, which they named the Ted Williams Tunnel.

According to the people being interviewed they planned everything meticulously, but unfortunately somebody missed something. While they were assembling the tunnel sections they realised they were 3'9" short of a harbour crossing. This swam around the back of my mind for a few days, as these things do, and I realised that 3'9" gaps are everywhere and they can destroy good ideas and great companies.

Here at 3ft9 we aim to identify those gaps and fill or bridge them. This could be via our internal projects where we've seen a problem in need of a solution or by supplying additional knowledge and resource to third parties as needed through our consultancy services.

Next time you find a gap, remember 3ft9.
